Tourism: A good employer when
well managed
It is an obvious fact that
there is no tourism industry without facilities to provide
all the necessary products and services to tourists, the
guests of the country.
No doubt that tourism
with its all sectors involved, provides jobs and
opportunities not only to people in the area, but also to
others who might be in the other side of the world. For
instance, a lot of travel agencies’ employees in Europe and
the continuity of their employment depends on how the
tourism & the travel business is doing in South Asia or in
south America.Just think of how many people working in the
tourism industry in one corner of the earth, lost their jobs because of what
happened in another
country.
The tourism
industry depends very much on the other industries, but also
it contributes a great deal of positive growth to other
industries.
Can you think
of this industry without the existence of hotels? No way.
So for a
successful tourism industry, a country needs establishments,
hotels of all standards, sizes and categories to provide
accommodation and other
services guests will need when they are away from home.
Now, think of
the process of building a hotel, how many people such a
project shall need and how many people it will need when
finished and starts operating!
From the
moment of planning the hotel and building it, till
furnishing, equipping it and opening it for business, the
hotel will need 100’s of people to
build it, run it and maintain it. Consultants, architects,
engineers, electricians, construction workers, drivers,
managers and a lot more
skilled workers and employees shall be involved.
How about
suppliers of machinery, furniture, interior designers, green
area designers and food suppliers? All shall benefit from
the project of building a
hotel. After the hotel is built, it will need people to run
it and those people actually shall be paid salaries by the
guests who will check in to start
using the facilities of the hotel.
Tourists
bring money into the country, thus the area will benefit
from this source of income. Prosperity and development of
the region will continue by building
new roads, power stations, gas stations, shops, diving or
skiing centers, tennis courts, restaurants, hotel and
restaurant schools, clinics and so on, to
meet the increasing demand and to modernize.
Tourism and
the income it generates, can affect the teacher, the farmer,
the policeman, and the taxi driver in that area, as well as
employees of ports and airports, fishermen,
language schools’ staff and IT people.
According to
lessons learnt from the experience of others, some countries
went the wrong way about developing their tourism
industries.
The wrong way
that affected the environment and their experience
had negative impacts on nature. But the wise tourism
developer and the decision maker should
be aware of the mistakes made by the others. Learning from
the mistakes from others is a lot cheaper!
Eliminating
or at least minimizing pollution and the risk of destroying
the nature should be a priority on the agenda of the
decision maker.
Because if
careful care of the environment is not taking from the
beginning, soon enough the country will be left with ghost
houses, sand boxes and abandoned
beaches, instead of lively, well managed guest houses on
clean and groomed beaches.
Tourism and
traveling in general is there to teach people about cultural
issues such the beauties of nature we have and to bring
people closer to each other,
narrow their differences and hopefully achieve a mutual
understanding.
