Leptis Magna, located about 75 miles outside Tripoli on a rocky chunk of the Mediterranean coast, was once the grandest Roman city in this part of the world. Thanks to intermittent flooding, the city's limestone remains, some dating from the second century B.C., were buried under several thick layers of sand for centuries and thus are remarkably well preserved.
