By Husein Turbi

Eager to see new places? And uncover the hidden? This land is packed with exciting beautiful beaches, ancient cities and towns, shady oases, history and a lot more. Have a look at Libya and enjoy the new experience.

Location

Libya is a North African state located on the southern shores of the Mediterranean between Tunisia and Egypt.

Geographic coordinates: 25 00 N, 17 00 E

Total Area: 1,759.540 sq km

Natural resources: petroleum, natural gaz, gypsum

Population: 5.631.585 (7.2004)

Libya is one of Africa’s largest countries, with barren rocky and sandy desert (part of the Great Sahara) in the south and the Mediterranean coastline in the north. The narrow coastline is Libya’s most densely populated area and is the home for the country’s largest cities such as Tripoli, Benghazi, Zawia, Misrata, Alkhoms (my home town), Tobruk, Derna and Albaida.

The three regions of Libya:

The north-west region Tripolitania, starts from the narrow Mediterranean coast plain with series of hills and small mountains till the Jafara plain and Jabal Nafusah plateau. Some places in this area may rise to 2000 and 3000 feet above the sea level. Tripoli is the largest city of this region as well as the capital of the country.

The north-east region Cyrenaica rises from the coastline of the Mediterranean to the Green Mountain (Al Jabal Alakhdar) and reaches the height of up to 3000 feet above sea level. This is Libya’s greenest region with Benghazi as its largest city.

3. The southern part of Libya Fezzan is the largest of all and spreads widely from the borders of Egypt and Sudan in the east and south east, passes by the borders of Chad and Niger in the south and reaches the Algerian and Tunisian borders in the south west and the in the west. Fezzan region is the home for tens of green oases which serve as stopping points for commercial caravans travelling the Sahara. Sebha is largest city of the area with Alkufra, Ghat and Gdames as the largest oases which very much depend on underground water resources to exist.

Climate

- Mediterranean climate on the coastal area. Average of 380 mm (15 inches) of rainfall during the winter months. Summer average temperature ranges from 30C (86F) to 8C (46F). Humidity can be very easily noticed and felt especially on the coastal towns of Tripolitania and can reach up to 80%.

- Desert climate in the southern Libyan areas with daytime winter temperature of 15C – 20C and may drop bellow zero at night.

Summer daytime temperature may soar to 50C, but cool nights are very common in the desert. The scorching wind called Ghibli blows from the Sahara and hits the coastline during spring time and brings with it a noticeable rise in temperature, dusty storms and sandy winds.
